When and where is the convention?
July 7 - July 9, 2000, in Louisville, Kentucky. We are in the process of choosing between several sites for the convention and plan to announce the official location soon.
Who is the convention for?
For anyone interested in social justice, activism, and the empowerment of young womyn, regardless of where you live.
Can boys attend the convention?
Yes, but there may be some workshops that are for womyn only. We feel that there are some subjects that are best explored by a group of womyn without the pressure of a male presence, and we ask that you respect this. However, there will be plenty of opportunities for male participation. We particularly invite men to facilitate workshops about men confronting sexism.
Can older activists attend the convention?
Yes. There are no restrictions on age.
Can non-Southerners run workshops?
Yes, anyone can run a workshop about any subject, provided that is relevant to young womyn activists. Please visit our workshop page to tell us your idea.
How much is the registration fee? What if I can't afford it?
The registration fee is $15, which includes the three day convention, all meals beginning Friday evening and ending Sunday afternoon, housing, and admission to a show on Friday and the Southern Girls Convention Vaudeville on Saturday. Good deal, huh? If you can't afford this price but would still like to attend, please give what you can and volunteer to help out with security, childcare, cleanup, food, signing people in, etc. No one will be turned away because they can't afford the fee. Click here to register.
Will there be childcare available?
Yes.
I am anti-choice. Can I attend?
This is definitely, 100%, and without a doubt a pro-choice event. You can attend, but anti-choice proselytizing is not permitted. There are other events for that.
Is that a picture of a guy on your Web page?
No. It's a female character named Esther from the graphic novel Jar of Fools by Jason Lutes, published by Black Eye Books in 1997. In the novel, Esther becomes fed up with sexist, degrading comments from strangers and finally smacks one of her harassers. Then she quits her job at a trendy coffee shop, cuts off her hair, and leaves her co-dependent, sexually-demanding boyfriend. We like her.
