Miseducation of Carceral Christianity: Just a Southern Thing?

Workshop description

Growing up in the Bible Belt provides many opportunities to interact and interrelate with Christianity. The aim of this workshop is to raise discourse regarding the cultural miseducation of girls and women who are reared and whose lives are shaped by extreme evangelical branches of Protestantism within the Bible Belt. As a girl child raised in one of these branches, I will use philosopher Michel Foucault's Discipline & Punish: The Birth of the Prison to conceptualize carceral (or imprisoning) aspects of Christianity that get transmitted by these branches, particularly to its female adherents, and then will open the workshop for discussion regarding their miseducative influences on current configurations of public education (Cremin, 1961) including schools, families, religion, mass media, etc.
