Workshop description
In light of recent anti-immigration and anti-choice laws being proposed across the nation, it is a crucial moment for Latinas and all women across the U.S. to mobilize and fight for our rights. As Latinas, we represent the largest growing population in the United States. According to the 2000 Census, 33% of Latinas reside in the South. Latinas contribute billions of dollars to the economy, yet a large proportion of us face economic and social hardships, especially in the area of healthcare. As Latinas, we are often marginalized because of racism and internalized oppression resulting in an alarming number of health disparities. It is important that, as women and Latinas, we mobilize in order to create change and bring forth social justice in our society. It is crucial for us to address and challenge the sexism, homophobia, transphobia, racism, and any other oppressive ideologies found within our own Latina Communities. This presentation is for Latinas and our allies who aim to challenge cultural norms that stigmatize HIV and sexuality in the Latina community. This workshop will also discuss innovative and empowering approaches to mobilize and enhance the leadership capacity of Latinas and all women in the United States.
