Community Housing Update

Wednesday, May 4th, 2005

Hello SGCers We have secured camping facilites that will be utilized for free community housing for attendees. Camp SGC is a campsite less than two miles from the campus that is managed by the city of Baton Rouge Department of Recreation. The campgrounds are very nice, very comfortable, and very welcoming. There are bathrooms with showers and a washateria on site, not to mention lots of covered picnic areas and beautiful oak trees surrounding the site. We will carpool back and forth, plus give out maps to Camp SGC at check-in. Also, SGC organizers will camp at the site right along with you, we will claim the campground for SGC 2005!!

So please remember to bring tents and bedding for your stay. We have some tents available, so let us know if you need one. Also, we can rent tents from our recreation building on campus for you, but you must let us know ahead of time so we can have it for you when you check in.

SGC Update

Tuesday, April 26th, 2005

Hello SGCers All is well here in Baton Rouge, planning is coming along nicely and we look forward to seeing you all in June. Here are some updates for everyone.

Keynote Speaker: Magdalen Hsu-Li will be leading a workshop on diversity awareness on Saturday morning. She will also be doing a musical performance after lunch, followed by the keynote speech. We are very excited to be bringing her, and encourage you to come and hear what she has to share.

Registration: Awesome folks are registering from all over the country. We encourage you to register ASAP if you know that you will be attending. We need to make sure to get enough housing, childcare, and meals for everyone.

Workshop Proposals: We have received some very interesting and exciting proposals so far, but we still need more. If you have a skill you want to share, or would like to talk about a specific issues, consider doing a workshop. This convention is all about YOU, so get involved and send us those proposals.

Housing: There is limited space available for indoor housing, but at this time the main free community housing option is Camp SGC. Please see the above post for details.

Meals: We will provide vegan and vegetarian meals on Saturday and Sunday Mornings and Saturday and Sunday Lunch. We are currently soliciting donations from local businesses for dinner on Friday and Saturday nights, and any leftover convention funds will go to meals for Friday and Saturday nights.

Childcare: Childcare will be available during all of the sessions on Saturday and Sunday. Unfortunately, we cannot provide childcare for infants under the age of one year. You are of course welcome to bring your children to the sessions if you prefer not to have childcare. If you know that you will need childcare, please register ASAP so that we can make accommodations for your children.

Entertainment: Nightly entertainment will consist of movies and live bands. The San Antonio band Girls in a Comma will perform on Saturday night. And send us an email with any movie ideas you have for Friday night.
