SGC 2002

Fourth Annual Southern Girls Convention: Athens, Georgia
July 19-21, 2002
SGC'02 organizer Natasha Murphy writes: SGC 2002 was a learning experience on many different levels for both the organizers and all the folks that came out. The workshops were awesome and generated a lot of progressive dialogue. Even in instances where workshop mediators were not able to make it, attendees and conference volunteers stepped up to deliver unrehearsed diatribes or facilitate discussions. Julie and Merritt put together everything from housing to the website to scheduling our two incredibly awesome keynote speakers. Thanks to Jenna and the other Athens Food not Bombs people everyone at the conference was fed (a lot) for free. FYI, Jenna put together the programs as well. Theo and Gordon put on some awesome shows despite unforeseen difficulties (all ages means all ages). Organizing alumni proved to be one of the most important resources of all. Everyone made it happen and we all learned some important lessons along the way. Registering is important, making sure that everything is wheelchair accessible is even more important (much love to Loree). The more attention and time you devote to workshop moderators the more motivated they will be about their workshops. Think carefully about your logo and every single word in your mission statement. Check your email every single day and remember to sleep a little bit during the conference. Also, control what the popular media has access to and subsequently puts in their articles. Here's looking forward to an amazing SGC 2003.
